In 1980, physician and immunologist Dr. Jacob Harich observed that the grapefruit seeds in his compost pile refused to decompose. They seemed immune to viruses, moulds and other parasites. In further studies of the grapefruit seeds, Dr. Harich found that they possessed a special protective mechanism. A secondary plant compound called "bioflavonoids" appeared to make the seeds resistant.
