There is increasing attention for algae as a sustainable source of valuable nutrients. This is not surprising because algae such as chlorella are easy to grow with little impact on the environment. In addition, algae are acceptable to most consumers, such as vegetarians and vegans. Chlorella Biologisch from Vitals contains no less than 500 mg of pure chlorella without additives per tablet.
This chlorella is cultivated according to the requirements of organic aquaculture, using a sustainable production method under the influence of natural sunlight and without synthetic additives during the cultivation process. The cell wall is broken during the production process so that the nutrients in chlorella can be properly absorbed. Due to the high concentration of nutrients (such as chlorophyll [leaf green], vitamin B12 and vitamin D2), chlorella is seen as a real superfood!
Rich in chlorophyll and other valuable nutrients
Chlorella vulgaris is a single-celled green microalgae that grows in freshwater. Microalgae such as chlorella are incredibly efficient in using sunlight and CO2 for photosynthesis, which explains their high growth rate. From substances formed in photosynthesis, the algae then makes more complex molecules such as phytonutrients and vitamins.
Superfoods are foods of natural origin that have a high nutritional value. This means that they contain a high concentration of various valuable nutrients. Chlorella certainly fits this definition. It is naturally rich in chlorophyll (leaf green), vitamin D2 and bioavailable vitamin B12. The latter is special because plant forms of B12 generally have no biological activity for humans. In addition, chlorella is a good source of folate and lutein (a carotenoid).
Due to the natural origin of the nutrients in Chlorella Biologisch, the amounts of these can fluctuate per harvest. That is why it is not possible to indicate an exact value on the packaging. The table below gives an impression of the amounts of the mentioned nutrients in Chlorella Biologisch from Vitals.

Chlorella helps protect against external influences
The price we pay for great technological and industrial progress is the burden on the environment with various harmful chemicals. Unfortunately, these also end up in our bodies from the environment. Antioxidants present in chlorella can help protect the body cells against oxidative damage by these undesirable external influences.
In addition, chlorella can support the body's defenses. It contributes to the functioning of specialized cells that play a role in the normal and balanced functioning of the immune system.
Differences between chlorella and spirulina
Another commonly used microalgae in nutritional supplements is spirulina. The name spirulina refers to spiral-shaped microorganisms called Arthrospira. Although spirulina is often called an algae, it is strictly speaking a bacterium. This explains why, unlike chlorella, the cell walls of spirulina do not have to be broken to make the nutrients more absorbable. Bacteria of the genus Arthrospira do not have tough cell walls, unlike algae such as chlorella.
Another difference is in the composition. Spirulina has a higher protein content than chlorella. But chlorella contains more chlorophyll, folate, vitamin D2 and biologically available B12. The applications are also different. Chlorella is mainly used for its cell-protecting properties and spirulina is popular because it supports energy levels and vitality.
Organic food supplements
Chlorella Biologisch from Vitals is an organically certified food supplement. The active ingredients of organic food supplements are guaranteed to be of natural origin and not synthetically manufactured. In addition, the environment, animals and people are taken into account as much as possible during production. Various regulations specify what is meant by this. For example, no chemical pesticides, artificial fertilizers or genetically modified organisms are used. The Skal Biocontrole institute checks whether the regulations are complied with and whether a product may be called organic. Organic products can be recognized by the code NL-BIO-01 and the European organic quality mark.
