Vitalplant Milk Thistle

Like many other types of thistle, the milk thistle flowers elegantly and gracefully. The so-called baskets of the thistle shine in a bright purple from June to September. They are mainly found in the Mediterranean region on stony or barren soils. Because of its great importance for medical use , it is deliberately cultivated and harvested in some countries, including Germany. The seeds, which grow shiny black below the flower, are particularly important for this purpose. In some preparations, the herb of the milk thistle is also processed.

The unusual name of the milk thistle has its origin in a legend of the Virgin Mary, whose milk moistened the thistle and turned some petals white. This legend is certainly also based on the other names by which the thistle is known, such as lady's thistle or Christ's crown; its Latin name is Silybum marianum.
Already used in ancient herbal medicine - among other things as an antidote for snake bites - milk thistle only became better known in this country around the 19th century. Its valuable ingredients make milk thistle as a capsule, tea, tincture or milk thistle extract a high-quality medical product and dietary supplement.
