Monk's pepper - what is it?

The monk's pepper (bot.: Vitex agnus-castus L.) is also known under the names chaste tree, chaste tree or lady's bed straw. The plant has been used traditionally since the Middle Ages. It was particularly popular with monks, who used the fruit as a spice, among other things, giving rise to the name "chaste tree".

The original home of the monk's pepper is the northern Mediterranean area to southwest Asia.
